Let's Get Going!
I greet the New Year anticipating the unfolding of Christ's plan for us in Tunica. We continue to welcome the new members of our leadership team as the various committees of the church meet for the first time this year. The leadership team brings a sense of excitement as they share their vision for minstry. We are blessed to have committed members willing to share their love for Christ.
In our worship time we are enjoying the gift of music each Sunday. It is a treat to have Mary Sipley leading our choir and worship. As a congregation we have been engaged in the hearing of Matthew's "Sermon on the Mount". It is a reading which begins in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 5 verse 1 and continues through chapter 7 verse 28. It is the first of five discourses found in Matthew, featuring Jesus as he tells us of the Kingdom of Heaven. The hearing of the discourse is spread over six weeks and lends itself to being told as a series. Each week's sermon begins with a recap of the past week's teaching and then moves forward to hear Jesus' new teaching. So, if you have missed a few weeks drop in it is easy to pick up the story without feeling like you have missed part of the message.
Lent begins on March 5th, with our Ash Wednesday Service. In this service we claim once again we are the created not the creator as we bear the mark of ashes, reminding us of our mortality. Through the Lenten season we will celebrate with five Lenten Lunches beginning on March 12th, and ending on April 9th. I invite you to come to our Family Life Center for Wednesday lunch featuring hot soup along with a devotional. It is a time to enjoy hearing God's word as several of the communities' pastors share their message of Christ.
It is also the season for appointing our pastors. Our Bishop begins the process by asking each of the local congregations to fill out a Pastoral Advisory Form. This form allows the congregation to share their wishes concerning their clergy leadership for the coming year. As United Methodist we are reminded that the Bishop is the one who appoints pastors, he alone makes this decision. So be in prayer over the next several months as together we discern where God is leading us, and what type of pastoral leader we need to be faithful to God's call. Our Pastor Parish Relations Committee will meet on February 24, 2014 to fill out the Advisory form. This is the first step in the process and is not final until the announcement of appointments at the Annual Conference in June.
I wish to thank you for sharing your lives with Celeste and I, we are blessed to have this time in our lives. We enjoy our life as part of your community and give thanks to God for our shared ministry.
